Subject: Class Works to Assure Scholarships for Archmere Students
One photo with cutline accompanies
One of the most important things Archmere alumni/ae can do is to make sure future students at our prep school have scholarships available to them. The Class of 1949 made a decision several years ago to establish and fund a scholarship program which helps one student a year. The student is selected by the Headmaster, not by the class.
The 2000-01 student recipient of the Class of 1949 Scholarship fund is Alex A. Abraham 2004, a freshman. He, his mother & father (this is a correction. Alex' father Anil was originally listed as deceased. Anil, according to Anil, is very much alive! Peter Mariani '79) and a brother two years younger than Alex live north of Wilmington. He has a grade point average of 3.79 and says, "I am doing my best to raise it to a 4.0." He loves soccer, went out for the team and played varsity soccer in his freshman year, even starting some games.
Alex couldn't be happier about attending Archmere. "There are no words that equal the same value of my gratitude for your generosity which allows me to attend Archmere Academy," he told members of the Class of '49 gathered for their quarterly luncheon.
Headmaster The Rev. Timothy H. Mullen '65, O. Praem., a regular at the Class of '49 luncheons, brought the class up to date on the fund raising for the renovations at the Justin E. Diny Science Center. That was the topic of his presentation at the last meeting.
Members of the Class of '49 had many questions about the recently attempted putsch at Archmere and father discussed each of them quietly and with dignity. At the conclusion of his remarks, father received a standing ovation. (Visit www.dinysoicety.org for more information)
The May 10, 2001 meeting was held in the Newark Room of the University of Delaware's Blue and Gold Club. It was the final one for this academic year. Attending the meeting were 49ers Lou Bachofer, Dick Berl, Al Haywood, Jim Healy, Andy Hutson, Dick Joyce, Tom McFarlin (who drove down form Springfield, Ma. that morning,) Bernie Mosbach and Phil Toman with guests Fr. Timothy Mullen, Fr. Joseph McLaughlin and, of course, Alex Abraham.
Class of '49 luncheons will resume in October. If you are a class member interested in attending, please contact Phil Toman who is coordinating the programs.
