Subject: Class of '49 Luncheon Programs
Filed January 13, 2001The Class of 1949's highly successful quarterly luncheon programs began as a result of the committee work done to plan their 50th reunion in 1999 ( See Photo). At each of the every-five-year Archmere reunions, the class has always held an activity after the Patio reception either in a member's home or a private dining room of an area restaurant.
When the planning group made up of Dick Berl, Al Haywood, Jim Healy, Andy Hutson, Dick Joyce, Len Quill and Phil Toman came together for the final (evaluation) meeting after the 1999 reunion, someone wisely noted that with the average age of the class "in the upper 60s" maybe meeting every five years wasn't the best way to continue these class events. Everyone agreed and the quarterly programs were born.
The events are held in and around the Wilmington area at places such as The Wilmington Club, The University and Whist Club, The Blue and Gold Club, Concordville Inn and The Christiana Hilton.
There have been special guests at each meeting. The Class of 1949's English teacher, Rev. Joseph A. Kelley, O. Praem., was a regular at every meeting until his death. Each year the Class of '49 Scholarship Fund supports one student at Archmere and last year's recipient, Blaise Fletcher, came to discuss "Archmere Then and Now." Our current and immediate past headmasters, Rev. Timothy Mullen, O. Praem. and Rev. Joseph McLaughlin, O. Praem., are regulars.
In the two remaining meetings this year, Fr. Mullen will give the Class of '49 a sneak preview of plans for the renovations to be done at the Justin E. Diny Science Center in March and the members will meet this year's scholarship recipient, Alex A. Abraham, in May. If any member of the Class of '49 would like to join the luncheon group, please contact Phil Toman at 302-737-9073 or 103 Chapel Hill Drive, Newark, DE 19711-3841.
