by Phil Toman, '49
(REHOBOTH BEACH, DE June 8, 2003) Amanda Chandler, winner of Miss Pike Creek and a participant in the Miss Delaware competition, through the media a "curve" at her press conference when she announced, "I never even intended to enter the first pageant let alone get this far." Amanda, a 2003 graduate of Archmere Academy, then explained her remark to an interested press conference.
Amanda had a friend who really wanted to enter the local competition, Miss Pike
Creek, but was a bit frightened by the whole concept. After much pleading, Amanda said she would enter the pageant with her friend and the two registered and were set for the event. "At the last minute my friend dropped out and the next thing I knew I had won," Amanda said laughing.
She not only won the Miss Pike Creek title and scholarship, she went on to Miss Delaware and captured another prize and more scholarship money. While Amanda did not take the Miss Delaware title, her vocal performance won Preliminary Talent Award was and, as winner that award, was invited back during the finals to perform "'Till There Was You" from Meredith Willson's The Music Man again. Not bad for a young woman who didn't even want to enter.
