Alumni Sports Banquet 2001
October 12, 2001

The fourth annual Alumni Sports Banquet and hall of fame ceremonies was held on October 12th, 2001 which is also the date of the 69th anniversary of the dedication of Archmere Academy. Over 150 people were at the banquet and also almost every class between 1961 and 1989 was represented. People literally came from all over the country to be there. The Alumni sports banquet has grown steadily over the years and is a great opportunity to get together with friends, classmates and teammates.

The inductees for 2001 were Donna Gioffre Furey '80 and Dr. Martin P. Londergan '61. Coach E. John Walsh* and Coach Vincent J. Filliben '47* were also honored for their lifetime service to Archmere. As part of honoring the two coaches the following sports teams were also honored: Mr. Walsh's 1960 & 1961 undefeated football teams, Mr. Filliben's 1969 undefeated basketball team, and Mr. Walsh's 1986 & 87 state champ volleyball teams.

Displayed for the first time at this year's banquet was the Alumni Sports Hall of Fame perpetual plaque. The plaque lists all of the members of the Hall of Fame. The plaque was made possible because of a donation by Rick Maiocco '73. Rick, a teammate, classmate and friend of Larry Cylc '73*, was unable to attend the Alumni Sports Banquet in October of 2000 when Larry was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Rick made a generous donation in Larry's name to purchase the plaque.

Longest trips: Dennis Doyle '62* came from Washington State. George Flamman '63 came from Virginia Beach, VA. Herbert H Slattery '63* came from Haltom City, TX. Sean Gleason '70 Colonial Hgts. VA. Its not even a reunion year for any of them! John Tosi '66* can in from Dallas TX. Names followed by * indicate they are members of the Alumni Sports Hall of Fame.

After some opening remarks by Peter Mariani '79, Vice President of the Archmere Alumni Association, Headmaster Fr. Mullen '65 lead the assembled alumni, family, and friends in prayer.

Fr. Mullen was the student manager for the track team when E. John Walsh was the track coach.

Mike Hare '79 was the MC for the evening. No one was spared his sharp wit except Mr. Walsh. Mike said E. John could still kick his b... so no digs about him.

Mike was very serious when he spoke about the contributions made by both coaches. Mike said he loves sports and studies coaches. He said that great coaches can coach anyone and that this was demonstrated time and time again throughout the careers of Vincent J. Filliben '47 and E. John Walsh.

Dr. Martin P. Londergan '61 spoke about the status of Archmere sports prior to the arrival of Coach Walsh to emphasize the magnitude of the turn around of the football program. See bio for members of the Alumni Sports Hall of fame.

Donna Gioffre Furey '80 spoke about the early days of women's sports at Archmere. She told the audience how Louis LoBosco '64 first had the idea of girls on the boys' cross country team. She also told the story of when she and Nancy Ladio '80 (now Hollenbeck) approached Paul Pomeroy about joining the boys track team. His response was "Sure Girls, we can always use great statisticians." Donna thanked her parents for sending her to Archmere and closed her speech by saying "I thank you for this award, but most of all, I thank you for the (Archmere) experience." See bio for members of the Alumni Sports Hall of fame.

Coach Vincent J. Filliben '47 mentioned state and school athletic records which were still held by players he coached, his life in retirement, and the need for prayer. He also ended his comments with one of his infamous quotes, "The only way to coast is downhill."

Coach E. John Walsh broke his long tradition of giving short speeches and talked about his entire career as a coach as well as the specific teams and athletes he coached. He said that he learned from Vincent J. Filliben '47 one thing that helped make him a good coach and that was "Coach the whole team and not just your star athletes."

1986 & 87 State Champion Volleyball teams.

The Volleyball program at Archmere has a very rich tradition. In the 24-year period between 1976 and 2000, the Varsity volleyball team made the state tournament 18 times, with 15 of those times being consecutive. During Mr. Walsh's tenure as coach, the team held 10 Catholic League titles, with 242 wins and 75 losses overall.
